The Breede River, also known as Breë River, is a river in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Travelling inland north from Cape Town, the river runs in a west to east direction.
McGregor, originally known as Lady Grey, offers the best examples of 19th century Cape architecture with its end-gables, stable doors and thatched roofs. The Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail links McGregor with the nearby village of Greyton. The trail abounds with numerous species of flora and fauna including some rare examples of protea and heather.
A valid permit has to be carried at all times. The Limietberg Nature Reserve along the Du Toitskloof Pass is also a popular hiking route.
The region may be best known for its wines but the variety of attractions, activities, accommodation, and culinary delights on offer - combined with spectacular scenery and the warm hospitality of the people, makes it a superb getaway. No matter what time of year and no matter whom the visitor, the Breede River Valley ensures visitors an unforgettable stay.
Gouda is a small village near Voelvlei Dam. Ceres was established in 1849 after the completion of Mitchell's Pass (the Toll House on the pass is a national monument) Tulbagh is a historical town with a wealth of charming Cape Dutch architecture. Wolseley near Tulbagh was established in 1875. The Breede River Valley is truly a valley for all seasons and the only valley with no less than 10 exquisite scenic entrances.
At Montagu you will find the world famous healing hot mineral springs. The Old English Fort (1899) is positioned above the road leading into Montagu in Cogmanskloof and Long Street has 14 of the town's 22 national monuments. There are three alternative routes from Cape Town to Ceres - two through Wellington taking visitors through Baines Kloof (winding old road) or Gouda (R44) and the third route is through Worcester (R43).
